During the 2019 ATFE Consultation, we engaged in focus groups with Executive Director Frank Yamada and ATFE member Kristina Lizardy-Hajbi The Association of Theological Schools (ATS) sharing insight from theological field educators on the redevelopment of ATS Commission Standards and Procedures for accreditation.
Some of the initial feedback from various ATFE members includes:
- The need for more robust Field Education standards to maintain and elevate Field Education as a priority within theological education. This serves to move FE from the margins into greater equality with other educational areas identified within the standards.
- A desire for Field Education to be integrated across the curriculum and to be referenced in the standards as the academic learning that it is, and not separate or different from academic learning.
- The need for greater clarity of standards for field educators as faculty roles with voice and vote and an emphasis on “expertise” in the field, in addition to “experience.”
- The intentional inclusion students as critical stakeholders within shared governance.
